Amethyst Crystals

Amethyst is a violet variety of quartz (silicon dioxide, SiO₂), renowned for its distinctive purple coloration ranging from pale lavender to deep violet. This hue arises from natural irradiation, trace iron impurities, and complex crystal lattice substitutions.

It belongs to the hexagonal crystal system, exhibits a vitreous (glassy) luster, and rates 7 on the Mohs hardness scale, rendering it durable for jewelry and decorative uses. Amethyst commonly forms in geodes within volcanic rocks, often as clustered crystal points or druzy linings.

Major deposits occur in Brazil, Uruguay, and other regions worldwide. Historically valued since ancient times—its name derives from the Greek "amethystos," meaning "not intoxicated," reflecting beliefs in its protective qualities—amethyst remains a popular semiprecious gemstone appreciated for both its aesthetic appeal and cultural significance.
