This exquisite selenite crystal cluster is a natural specimen sourced from the mineral-rich regions of Chihuahua, Mexico. Measuring approximately 1.5 inches in length and under 1 inch in height, it features a compact cluster of elongated, prismatic crystals with a translucent, light yellowish-brown hue emerging from a small, white-to-gray base matrix. The crystals display a vitreous luster and subtle clarity, rendering this miniature piece suitable for detailed mineral collections, small decorative arrangements, or educational displays.

This selenite cluster originates from the geologically significant areas of Chihuahua, Mexico, akin to formations found in the renowned Naica Mine and nearby deposits. The region's ancient volcanic and hydrothermal activity has created ideal conditions for such crystalline growth.

Selenite, the transparent crystalline form of gypsum (CaSO₄ · 2H₂O), develops through evaporative precipitation and recrystallization in stable subterranean environments. In Chihuahua's deposits, formation begins with groundwater heated by underlying magmatic intrusions, dissolving anhydrite (the anhydrous form of calcium sulfate) from surrounding limestone.

Over extended geological timescales—often hundreds of thousands of years—the cooling solutions become supersaturated, leading to the slow hydration and precipitation of gypsum. This occurs via a dissolution-recrystallization process in low-salinity, mineral-rich fluids within caves or voids, where consistent temperature and humidity prevent rapid changes that could disrupt growth.

The prismatic habit and subtle coloration in this specimen result from trace impurities, such as iron oxides, incorporated during crystallization. The compact size reflects formation in smaller pockets or fractures, contrasting with the massive crystals in larger caverns, yet exemplifying the same precise geochemical conditions.

Selenite is soft (Mohs hardness 2) and water-soluble; handle gently to avoid scratches or dissolution. Store in a dry environment away from moisture and direct sunlight to maintain its natural translucence.
